86 wounded in Colombia as buses collide
BOGOTA - At least 86 people were wounded in Colombia on Monday after three buses collided on a major highway in the center of the capital.
Yesid Ariza, commander of the Transmilenio Police, said the accident had occurred when traffic was at its peak as thousands of people were commuting between their homes and work places.
The crash happened when one of the public buses braked suddenly, making it impossible for two other buses to avoid the collision.
"Just moments before the incident there was complete congestion and long lines of buses crowded the northern highway," said Ariza.
A total of 36 ambulances rushed to the scene and medical personal helped provide on-site first aid. Those severely injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Two of the injured, including a driver, were reported to be in a critical condition.
